The Books For Teachers Program
The Renée B. Fisher Foundation
A little-known fact about Pequot Library’s Summer Book Sale is a “behind-the-scenes” program linking library book sales with underserved school classrooms. For the 14th year, The Renée B. Fisher Foundation’s Books for Teachers program has been active at Pequot Library. The foundation’s program started with a simple idea: provide an abundance of books of all types and subjects to children whose access to books may be limited. What better place to find a rich resource of books at affordable prices than a library book sale? What better way to get the books into student hands than through their teachers?
The Renée B. Fisher Foundation is a nonprofit, philanthropic organization located in Greens Farms, CT. Pequot Library’s program was the flagship program, serving Bridgeport and New Haven’s underserved school communities. 2016 proves to be a record-breaking year with more than 400 inner-city Bridgeport and New Haven classroom teachers already receiving $100 in Books for Teachers "Bucks" to spend at Pequot Library’s Summer Book Sale. All public school classroom teachers in the Bridgeport and New Haven School Districts are encouraged to apply for an award. Apply now as awards are given on a first come/first served basis. The deadline is June 30, 2017. Download a Books for Teachers application.
Teachers who have benefited from the program in previous years, have remarked on the wide variety of material at the sale, including books, media, records, and prints, all of which can be used in numerous ways to encourage reading, research, and discovery, from supplementing classroom libraries to reading incentive awards. Known as “The Best Book Sale in New England,” Pequot Library’s 57th Annual Summer Book Sale will be held, July 21 – 25, 2017. Admission is free and the sale is open to the public. There will be over 140,000 books in over 60 categories, plus CDs, DVDs, records, and special items. Proceeds help fund Pequot Library's over 750 annual programs and events for all ages.
Even though there will be more children’s books available in this year’s sale, due to the increase in applications from the Books for Teachers program, Pequot Library is calling out to the community for new or gently-used children's book donations. Books can be donated in the gray shed off of Pequot Library’s parking lot, shed open 24/7 for the convenience of the community.
