Build A Better World Summer Reading 2017

Monday, August 07, 2017, 10:00am - 06:00pm
  • n-SUMMER-READING-628x314The goal of the Summer Reading Program is to encourage children to continue reading throughout the summer months, and to provide a fun and free learning activity for the community that can engage children on a daily basis.
  • The program welcomes pre-readers through readers entering 12th grade. Pre-readers may have books read to them. Any book read at home, on vacation, or in the Library will be eligible for their reading log.

This year’s summer reading theme, Build A Better World, is seen through the lens of building a stronger community through acts of service and charitable work, both locally and globally.

Sign ups for our 2017 Build A Better World Summer Reading program will begin at Miss Susan's Potluck & Campout on Friday, June 9 and will continue through Sunday, August 20 in the Children’s Library.

When children sign up, they will be given a reading log. The reading log stays in the Library and is updated when kids visit. Children keep track of Time Read, not the number of books read.
Participants can come into the library and receive One sticker for their reading log for every Five Hours of reading and One zip tie. With these zip ties, readers will build a beautiful and symbolic sculpture – “a community reading tree” that will grow on Pequot's Great Lawn outdoors throughout the summer as children read.

Everyone will receive a prize! At the end of August, readers will hand in their reading logs at the "Library Store," where they will pick up their prizes.

Wait! There’s another way readers can earn even more stickers. Exciting, thought-provoking weekly challenges have been created around community service and small acts of kindness. Check our website each week to accept the challenge!
