Alison Barry, President
A member of Pequot Library’s Board of Trustees since 2003, Alison served a previous term as Executive Vice President, is chair of the Leadership Council and on many other Library committees. Alison attended Hamilton College and the School of Visual Arts, graduating with a BFA. She is an active member, of not only the Library, but also of the Fairfield community, serving on the Trinity Church Vestry and on the board of the Trinity Parish Nursery School. She lives in Fairfield with her husband, Michael, and their children, who are some of the Library’s most eager patrons.
Nicholas Morello, Jr., Executive Vice President
Nicholas joined the Pequot Library Board of Trustees in 2013. He is a member of the Finance Committee. He spent several years working at the Pequot Library as a Page while he was a student at Fairfield Prep and he's been a Library patron and supporter ever since. He earned a BS from Georgetown University in 1995 and has 18 years of experience working as a finance professional with a focus on Mergers & Acquisitions, High Yield Financings and Event Driven/Special Situations Investing. He has served on the Boards of Atkins Nutritionals and Primary Wave Music Publishing and is a member of the Georgetown University Alumni Admissions Program. Nicholas is a private investor and consultant. Nicholas, and his wife, and family live in Fairfield.
R. Scott Balkan, Vice President of Investments
Scott joined the Board at Pequot Library in 2012 and is co-chair of the Pequot Golf Classic Committee. He earned his BA from Princeton University in 1997. Since graduating college, Scott worked as a trader at Morgan Stanley, a Partner and Portfolio Manager at Archeus Capital Management and at Citigroup, where he was most recently a Managing Director and the Head of Distressed Credit for North America. Since 2014, he has worked at Silver Point Capital, a distressed credit hedge fund in Greenwich, CT. He lives in Fairfield with his wife, Laura, their son, Eli and daughters, Livia and Heidi.
Kelly D. Laferriere, Treasurer
Kelly joined the Board of Trustees of Pequot Library in 2011, now serves as Treasurer and co-chair of the April Gala Committee. An active volunteer and Library user, Kelly is a member of the Children’s Committee, and the Development Committee. Kelly earned a BA at Georgetown University, and went on to become a business executive. She has 15 years of experience providing programming and operations leadership at both Six Flags and ESPN, and is currently consulting. Kelly serves on the board of the Southport Sailing Foundation, and was a member of the Women’s Sports Foundation Advisory Board. Kelly and her husband, Rick, live in Fairfield with their three children.
Doug Fried, Assistant Treasurer
Doug joined the Pequot Library Board of Trustees in 2013. He has been a volunteer for the Pequot Library Book Sale since 1992, and has been chair or co-chair for 10 of those years. Doug holds a BS in Economics and Math from MIT, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is currently Managing Director of Stena Metal Inc., a metals distribution and trading company based in Stamford CT. Doug has also served on an advisory board at the American Cancer Society, and has participated in pro-bono consulting work for non-profits under the auspices of Harvard Business School's Community Partners program. He lives in Fairfield with his wife and their son, both of whom have had very active roles in Pequot's Book Sales.
Graham E. Michener, Secretary
Graham joined Pequot’s Board in 2009, and served as Assistant Treasurer and is currently co-chair of the Pequot Golf Classic Committee. Prior to joining the Board, Graham helped launch the Kentucky Derby Fundraiser. Graham graduated from Lafayette College and later from the Stern School of Business at New York University. After working for ten years on Wall Street, he is now with RSR Partners, a leading executive and board recruiting firm. Graham is an active member of the endowment team at the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, which he also attended, and is on the board of the Trinity Parish Nursery School. He and his wife, Jane, have three young children and live in Fairfield.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Fr. Gerry Blaszczak S.J.
Fr. Blaszczak is co-director of the Spiritual Direction Training Program sponsored by the Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Fairfield University. Fr. Blaszczak, who holds a PhD from Harvard University in New Testament with a secondary specialization in Islamic Studies, has been on the faculty of Le Moyne College, Fordham University, and Hekima College in Nairobi, Kenya. He was novice director for the Maryland and New York provinces of the Jesuits, superior of the Fordham Jesuit community, parochial vicar at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Raleigh, N.C., pastor of the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in Manhattan, and secretary for the service of faith at the Jesuit general headquarters in Rome.
Caroline M. Calder
Caroline joined the Pequot Library Board of Trustees in 2013. She is involved in the Library's strategic fundraising and development initiatives. After receiving her BA from Wells College, Caroline started her career on Wall Street where she spent 15 years in institutional sales/trading and institutional investment management. She shifted into private wealth management over 12 years ago and is currently with Merrill Lynch Wealth Management. Caroline has served a number of non-profit organizations over the years in a variety of roles from volunteer to Board/Committee member to Board Chair. Besides the Pequot Library Board of Trustees, she is currently involved at the Committee level and/or serves on the Board of Directors of four other non-profit organizations within Fairfield County and the State of Connecticut. She resides in Westport.
Celie’s history of volunteerism includes fundraising for the American Cancer Society and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Celie graduated from the University of North Carolina Greensboro with degrees in Accounting and in Economics, pursued graduate studies in Journalism and Education at Salem College, and graduated from Cornell’s Food Industry Management Program. She has been active on the annual Art Show committee since 2012, and co-chaired the 2014 Art Show. She is a Marketing Executive with a background in Brand Development. She recently launched Aspire Media Marketing, and she resides in Fairfield.
John E. Herzog
Mr. Herzog is formerly Chairman of R.M. Smythe & Co., Inc., an auction house, specializing in antique stocks and bonds, banknotes, coins, autographs and photographs. Prior to that he was Chairman Emeritus of Herzog Heine Geduld, Inc., which was founded in 1926 by his father. He joined the firm in 1959 and spearheaded its expansion into the third-largest NASDAQ market maker in the country. Merrill Lynch acquired the firm in 2000. In 1988, Mr. Herzog founded the Museum of American Finance, donating part of his collection of financial memorabilia to the Museum. The Museum is an affiliate of the Smithsonian. A graduate of Cornell and New York University Stern School, he is a member of the Board of the Fairfield Museum and a member of the Down Town Association and the Union League Club in New York, plus the Fairfield County Hunt Club. He lives in Fairfield.
Daniel G. Johnson, Esq.
Daniel joined the Pequot Library Board of Trustees in 2013. He is a principal at Cummings & Lockwood LLC, where he is the principal-in-charge of the firm’s Stamford Office. He practices primarily in the areas of estate planning, family business succession planning, estate administration and trust administration. Daniel is an author of Settlement of Estates in Connecticut 3d. Daniel earned a BA from Georgetown University and his JD from the University Of Virginia School of Law. He is currently the Treasurer for Friends of Materials for the Arts in New York City and is also a member of the board of the New Paradigm Theatre Company. Daniel and his wife live in Fairfield with their three sons.
Sean Kelly is an award-winning art director and illustrator whose clients include The New York Times, The Washington Post, Businessweek and The Atlantic. He has received honors from the Society of Illustrators and the National Cartoonists Society. Sean leads creativity seminars that teach corporate groups how to be more innovative, and has lectured at Columbia University, Fairfield University and the Fairfield Museum & History Center. He has been featured on News12, in The Connecticut Post and Fairfield Magazine, which named him one of Fairfield’s “25 Most Intriguing People.” A graduate of Brown University, Sean was a Getty Fellow at USC’s Annenberg School. He and his wife Megan live in Fairfield.
Lori has been an active participant at Pequot Library as a patron and volunteer for many years. She graduated from Miami University with a B.A. in both Public Administration and Political Science, and worked at the investment firm, Gradison McDonald before becoming Director of Governmental Affairs for a non-profit organization. Lori has a Master Gardening Certification and has served on the board of the Fairfield Garden Club. She is part of the PTA of the Fairfield Country Day School where her son attends. Lori resides in Fairfield with her husband Ryan, and their six children.
Tom moved to Fairfield in 1992 after he and his future wife were charmed by the annual Summer Book Sale. They began volunteering in 1993, starting as book sale volunteers, and then he started setting up audio visual equipment in the auditorium for events. Lawlor is the general manager of M Communications in Stamford. He attended Sacramento State University, majoring in journalism. His career has included playing numerous bad guys in karate B movies and writing for publications ranging from Backwoodsman Magazine to the Fairfield Citizen. He was director of the Fairfield YMCA Adventure Guides program from 2004-2010 and a former Little League coach. He and Laura live in Southport and have two daughters, Caroline and Julia, both of whom share their love of reading, which began at Pequot Library.
Nelson was raised in Connecticut and graduated from Suffield Academy and the University of Maryland with a BS in Business and Public Administration. In 2007, after a career in both domestic and international sales management, he joined the Connecticut Audubon Society, from which he retired in 2017 as executive director. During his tenure, the deficit was reduced by 50% and grant-supported, science-based education programs were delivered to over 30,000 inner-city children. A committed volunteer, North has chaired fundraising campaigns for the Ruffed Grouse Society, Ducks Unlimited, and the Coastal Conservation Association. North and his wife, Peg (who is also active in the community), have lived in Southport since 1976.
Saba Pina joined the Pequot Library Board of Trustees in 2015 and looks forward to becoming more involved in Children’s programming as well as fundraising and community outreach efforts. Saba has a Masters in Education in Counseling Psychology from Boston College and has 15 years of experience as a behavioral health clinician. Currently, she is continuing her career in education as a preschool teacher at the Adam J. Lewis Preschool in Bridgeport, CT and is in the process of earning a Child Development credential (CDA). Saba resides in Weston with her husband Michael and their four children.
William P. Russell, Jr.
Bill is a Principal at Sterling Investment Partners in Westport. He joined Pequot’s Board in 2006 and served as President from 2010 - 2014. Bill also serves on many Library committees, including the Capital Campaign Committee and the Finance Committee. After graduating from Hamilton College, Bill spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar in Singapore. He began his career at Deloitte Consulting, earned an MBA at Harvard and spent five years at Lehman Brothers. Bill and his wife, Erin, live in Fairfield with their children, Maggie, Claire, Edward and Henry.
Joining the Board of Trustees in 2012, Andrea has been an active member of the Pequot Community, including co-chairing the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Art Show. She is an active volunteer in her children's schools, co-chairing an art history program and co-chairing fundraising events. Andrea earned her BAS from the University of Delaware. She has over fifteen years experience helping clients make more insightful decisions that deliver improved business metrics. In 2010, the strategic marketing analytics firm that Andrea co-founded almost a decade before was acquired and she is now consulting. Andrea and her husband, Andrew live in Fairfield with their three children.
Coke Anne Murchison Wilcox
A member of the Art Show Committee and current 2015 co-chair, Coke Anne started her career as an architect, graduating cum laude from Princeton University. Over her career she worked with several architects including Philip Johnson. Coming from an entrepreneurial family, and after launching her three children, she was the owner and proprietress of Maidstone Arms Inn and Restaurant in East Hampton for 16 years. She has been involved as a board member with numerous philanthropic and non-profit organizations, including the Drama League of New York and the American Ballet in New York. She resides in Westport with her husband, artist Jarvis Wilcox.
Christopher J. Wright
Chris joined Goldman Sachs in 2001 after receiving his MBA from Columbia University. His team oversees $4.5BN of client assets for individuals, families, and foundations. He previously worked for NBC's Olympic Unit and the National Hockey League. Chris earned a BA from Colgate University, majoring in History. He was a four-year letterman in lacrosse. He and his wife Sandi have three daughters and live in New York City and Southport.
