BACKGROUND – The current United Illuminating (UI) application (Docket 516) seeks to install over 100 towering monopoles and transmission line cable, standing at a staggering height of 100 – 195 feet, along the railroad corridor over a span of 7.3 miles, beginning east of Sasco Creek in Southport and culminating at the Congress Street Substation in Bridgeport.
As currently proposed, there will be a loss of 19.25 acres of permanent utility easement, taking land rights from residents, businesses, organizations, and municipalities. The economic and environmental consequences could be profound, including the clearing of 6.5 acres of trees, 5.5 acres of which would be permanent. As stated this summer by State Representative Jennifer Leeper, “This represents an enormous change to the landscape of our community and neighborhoods.”
The current application, is a pending matter, Docket #516, with the CT Siting Council. Pequot Library has been granted intervener status and can provide testimony as part of the public proceedings with the Siting Council. The list of real and unknown concerns is mounting and includes, but is not limited to:
*permanent tree loss all along the rear property
*115 kV transmission cables in closer proximity to our Children’s Library entrance
*possible loss of parking
*loss of around 1/3 of an acre of our rear property
*threat to our potential to be recognized as a National Historic Landmark
*hindered by our new designation as an “adjacent property” to UI
